As a first generation Mexican American, born and raised in Southern California, my parents instilled the importance of a having a solid educational foundation to become successful in life.
It is due to that educational foundation that I bring over twenty years of government and political experience having served as a staff member for the California Governor and California State Legislature, and as a senior aide to a member of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisor.
It was during my time working for our local County Supervisor that I participated on numerous educational committees for various school districts including the Promise Scholar Program administered through the Ontario-Montclair School District.
In my recent position as Director of Government Affairs for the leading trade association representing the residential home building industry, I worked closely with school districts throughout San Bernardino County as a taxpayer advocate. I was instrumental in introducing a high school apprenticeship program to district staff at the following high schools of Citrus High School (Fontana), Upland School High School, and Los Osos High School in the Chaffey Joint Unified School District. This apprenticeship program would create opportunities for high school students interested in the construction field to obtain valuable experience before entering the workforce.
Since leaving government service in 2014, I have owned and operated a governmental relations and legislative advocacy firm, and have been an account executive for a leading Inland Empire-based public relations firm, where I was responsible for managing a diverse client base including educational organizations, public agencies, land developers, renewable energy firms, and issue advocacy.
I have been an active member of my community having served on the board of directors for my local Rotary Club and serving twice as Chairman of the Chino Valley Unified School District Measure M Citizen Oversight Committee (2006-2015) overseeing $150 Million school bond measure.
I have represented my community at both the local and state level throughout the years, having served as a Chino Hills Parks & Recreation Commissioner (2006-2010) and served as Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s appointee to the California Council on Criminal Justice (2009-2011), a statewide commission overseeing a comprehensive statewide plan for the improvement of criminal justice and delinquency prevention programs.
I graduated from Mount San Antonio College with a Liberal Arts Degree and California State University, Fullerton with a Political Science Degree, while working various retail jobs to pay my way through school.
For the past 16 years, I have been married to my amazing wife Joya, a civil engineer with CalTrans, and have been blessed to be the parents of two boys who are attending local schools.
